The public beta of Quake Live, a browser-based version of id Software's Quake III, was launched this afternoon. The FPS is available to anyone running Windows XP or Vista with either Internet Explorer 7 or higher or FireFox 2.0 or higher.
You'll need to visit the site to download and install an ActiveX plugin that allows the game to run in your browser utilizing files that it downloads from the Quake Live site site and stores on your computer. The plugin ensures that these files are up-to-date every time you visit the site to play, streaming new content and updates to you without the need for you to download and install game patches.
The game will be 100% free to play through ad-support, I haven't tried it out yet so I don't know how many ads to expect but it shouldn't be bad. There are 40 arenas and 5 game modes for you to try out so you shouldn't get bored to quickly.
