Firefox Hits The Billion Downloads Mark

Late last night Mozilla reached a major milestone with the one billionth download of Firefox.

"This is a monumental event – Firefox has come a long way since its debut in November 2004, thanks to the amazing Firefox community," Mozilla wrote in a blog post.

On Monday, www.onebillionplusyou.com will go live and act as a hub of information concerning the billionth download of Firefox. To help celebrate the milestone Mozilla is asking users to get involved by taking a picture of yourself proudly sporting Firefox apparel (t-shirt, hat, etc) or poster. You can go to a famous landmark, your favorite place nearby, or anywhere you think will make for a great photo.

Checkout the Spread Firefox site for more details. And for those of you that want to follow along as Firefox looks to reach the next major milestone you can do so on Twitter @FirefoxCounter.

Update: Windows 7 Master Key Leaked Now Blacklisted

Earlier this week we reported that the Windows 7 OEM master key had been leaked to the web. The leak could have resulted in the activation of an unlimited number of copies of Windows 7 OEM editions. However Microsoft has moved fast to combat the issues and according to Alex Kochis, Director of Genuine Windows at Microsoft, Microsoft has blacklisted the key, delivering a new key to Lenovo.

Kochis said Microsoft is working with Lenovo to ensure that all the Windows 7 based PCs the company ships will contain a new key and none use the old key. All Windows 7 installs using the leaked key will be blacklisted and customers will be warned that they have a non-genuine version of Windows.

Apple Rushes Out SMS Vulnerability Patch

Apple has been working feverishly to pump out a new patch for a recently publicized SMS vulnerability originally disclosed by researchers Charlie Miller, an analyst with Independent Security Evaluators, and Collin Mulliner from the Technical University of Berlin, at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.

At approximately 2pm EST Apple released the iPhone 3.0.1 software update. The release notes of the 3.0.1 update were short and to the point: "Fixes SMS vulnerability" for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

To download the 3.0.1 security update, connect the iPhone to your computer, click on the "Check for update" button and follow the on-screen instructions.

Microsoft To Give Some Beta Testers Free Copies Of Windows

Microsoft has decided that it will reward some of their beta testers with free copies of Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, however use regular folks shouldn't get too excited. The company is planning on sending these free copies to invitation-only testers who received the very earliest builds of the OS last year.

"To show our appreciation, members of the invitation-only Windows 7 Technical Beta Program will be eligible for a free, final copy of Windows 7 Ultimate," said Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc in a post to the Windows 7 blog. Just last week, LeBlanc had categorically said no to the question of whether or not testers would receive a free copy.

Since the free copies are for invitation only users those of us that downloaded the public beta or release candidate will not be eligible.

"If you were invited to join the Windows Technical Beta Program, you are eligible to receive a free final copy of Windows 7 Ultimate," added Anthony Mann in a post to TechNet. Mann is the Microsoft employee who manages the Windows forums on TechNet. "If you were not sent an invitation to participate, this offer does not apply to you."

Mann has added that all eligible users will be getting a direct email in the next couple days. He also said, "If you want to check the newsgroups now, you can login to Microsoft Connect and go the “Windows 7 Beta Program” site. This is secured only to members of Windows 7 Beta. You can then click on “Newsgroups” on the left to find the .Beta_Program newsgroup to ask any questions you might have. If you don’t have access to the “Windows 7 Beta Program” site on Connect you were not part of this program and are therefore not eligible."

Unfortunately I'm not on the invitation list so it looks like I'll be waiting until Oct. 22nd and dishing out my hard earned cash like everyone else.

Windows 7 OEM Key Out In The Open

Hackers have found the proverbial goose that lays golden eggs, ok well maybe not golden eggs but they have found the mother of all product keys. The super secret OEM master key that will activate an unlimited number of copies of Windows 7 OEM editions.

The key is meant to allow OEMs such as Dell, HP or in this case Lenovo, to pre-activate machines so they are already setup for consumers when they get them home. The OEM activation system relies on a special BIOS string that identifies itself to Windows. A software hack is all that's required to fool Windows into thinking that any machine is an authorized one that can be activated using the OEM license key.

The OEM license key this time around was extracted from a legitimate Lenovo OEM Ultimate edition DVD .ISO file which contained the data that hackers needed to make the activation tools. The data was first posted on a Chinese web forum and has since spread its way around the web.

The new master key has already been used to implement a click-and-forget activator which some users have confirmed works on downloaded copies of the Windows 7 Ultimate OEM.

This is pretty amazing, and startling news for Microsoft and their OEM partners. Especially considering the consumer release date isn't slated until Oct. 22

Greenpeace Boycotts HP Paints 'Hazardous Products' On Roof

Greenpeace: Hewlett-Packard = Hazardous Products

Action at global headquarters highlights company’s broken promises on hazardous chemical elimination

A Greenpeace action today exposed electronics giant Hewlett-Packard for backtracking on its public commitment to eliminate key toxic chemicals in its products by the end of this year. In Palo Alto, Greenpeace activists climbed to the top of HP’s global headquarters and painted the message “Hazardous Products” in big, bold letters on the roof. The message, applied using non toxic children’s finger-paint, covered over 11,500 square ft., or the size of two and half basketball courts.

This protest follows similar demonstrations against HP at its offices in China and Holland. HP employees were also greeted today by an automated phone calls from actor William Shatner, calling upon the company to phase out the toxic chemicals.

“HP continues to put hazardous products on the market despite promises made years ago to phase out these toxic compounds,” said Greenpeace International Toxics Campaigner Casey Harrell. “Apple has led the sector in phasing out of these toxic chemicals. HP should be following Apple’s lead, instead of breaking its commitment and delaying action.”

Earlier this year, HP postponed its 2007 commitment to phase out of dangerous substances such as brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastics from its computing products. Its delay shifts compliance up to two years from 2009 to 2011.

Apple’s new computer lines, virtually free of PVC and completely BFR free demonstrate the technical feasibility and supply chain readiness of producing alternatives to these hazardous substances. Competitors Dell, Lenovo and Acer have stayed ahead of HP by putting models on the market that are free of or at least significantly reduced in the use of PVC and BFRs. HP currently stands in 14th place in the quarterly Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics having been penalized in the previous ranking for its backtracking on PVC/BFR phase out.

“Greenpeace will not stand idly by while companies that commit to environmentally responsible action backtrack on commitments,” Harrell said. “As the number one seller of PCs worldwide, HP has both the responsibility and the ability to make sure the company no longer deserves the moniker ‘Hazardous Products’.”

PVC and BFRs are highly toxic, and can release dioxin, a known carcinogen, when burned. With the growing tsunami of electronic waste being shipped to developing countries for open burning, workers who deal with e-waste are at the most significant risk for health impacts. Eliminating these substances will decrease exposure to workers and consumers and will increase the recyclability and reusability of electronic products.

More details from Greenpeace - "HP Breaking Green Promises – No More Excuses!". Images from the action, as well as b-roll footage of e-waste disposal is available at:

Bloggers Looking For A Cheap Advertising Tool? Try Laptop Stickers

Often fledgling bloggers and webmasters are looking for cheap effective way to market their new site. We often go to extremes looking for a way to get the word out about new projects. I've seen bloggers spend hundred of dollars on advertising with things like new hats, t-shirts, business cards, flyers and more of the traditional avenues.

However one approach that I've seen that more often than not gets overlooked are stickers. More specifically laptop stickers.

What better way to gain some exposure. I mean if you are like me you carry your laptop or hand held device with you everywhere you go right? So why not cover it with some branding for your site.

Laptop stickers from a company like PSPrint can be a great marketing tool for bloggers, businesses or just about anyone wanting to promote a site, brand or company. Sticker printing from PSPrint is a relatively inexpensive with prices starting as low as $40 for 250 2" x 2" stickers. Making it a cheap way to get your name out there to hundreds of potential visitors.

Stickers are available in any size from 2" x 2" all the way up to 12.5" x 17". You can upload your sites logo or let them create a design for you. You've also got the option to go with traditional square stickers or go with something more custom and have them custom die-cut into various shapes.

At less than 20¢ a pop you really can't go wrong, and I know some hot looking Geek-News.Net stickers would be well worth the cost. Hey if Allen Stern and the guys over at CenterNetworks can do it, and the guys at Google can then why can't we?

Intel 34nm SSDs Suffer Defective Firmware

Just days after their release Intel's new 34nm X25-M G2 "Postville" SSDs have been pulled from store shelves and are no longer being shipped by Intel. According to a blog post from OEM system builder Puget Systems the new SSDs suffer a serious firmware
defect that has been discovered in the first batch of drives shipped last week.

There is a defect in the units which causes data corruption if - and only if - a password is set on the drive in the system BIOS and then changed or disabled later.

Intel has halted shipments of the Postville SSDs until they have installed the new firmware and the problem is resolved. However, for those of you that might have already purchased the drive Intel has said you should be fine as long as you don't utilize a BIOS password on the drive. Intel advises consumers not to alter, delete, or create BIOS passwords until the drive is flashed with the update firmware.

The firmware can be downloaded here when it eventually goes live.

Top eBay Sellers To Receive New Perks

ebay logoSo called "Top-Rated Sellers" on eBay will now receive a few extra perks including a slash of listing fees of up to 20 percent and higher ranked listings in the search queue. All this as a way for eBay to rev up its long-stagnant Marketplaces arm.

Announced on Monday, the new program is aimed at rewarding the most reputable sellers, who drive shoppers to the site and give top customer service. eBay will give the "Top-Rated Seller" designation to approximately 150,000 sellers that conduct 100 transactions a year and post at least $3,000 in annual sales volume.

Those sellers must have a detailed seller rating of at least 4.6 out of a possible 5 on eBay's newest seller rating system. The ratings are a measure of a sellers auction accuracy, shipping time and cost.

"For buyers, the new eBay Top-Rated Seller status makes it easy to find the highest quality sellers on eBay based on the feedback of other buyers," said Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay Marketplaces. "For sellers, the Top-Rated Seller status recognizes and rewards their commitment to consistently delivering the highest level of customer satisfaction."

Other changes eBay is making include a more streamlined claims process when winning auction bidders do not pay, an easier system for editing listings of bulk items and a tool that allows sellers to see the factors affecting the placement of their items on eBay's site.

Apple Rejects Google Voice

Apple has always ruled the App store with an iron fist, often times rejecting the mundane apps like the fart machine and baby shaker. But not only do they reject the distasteful apps they have also taken a stance to reject apps that are competitive with products are applications they already have.

The company has yet again taken an anti-competitive stance rejecting the Google mobile software program Google Voice from the iTunes App Store.

News of the banned iPhone app first hit the web when TechCrunch published an article Monday quoting a Google spokesperson that said the Google Voice mobile application was submitted to Apple six weeks ago and was rejected. "Apple did not approve the Google Voice application," the Google spokesperson told TechCrunch. According to the report Apple went one step further and pulled a non-Google iPhone app from iTunes called GV Mobile on the basis of the applications duplicate functionality to apps that already come with the iPhone.

Sean Kovacs, creator of GV Mobil, originally said that his app was personally approved by Phil Schiller Apple’s senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing. Apple has since done a 180 informing Kovacs via phone that his app would be immediately removed from the app store.

Speculation has it that AT&T was concerned over the potential for competition and objected to Google Voice. Google Voice could have potentially interfered with the carrier’s business model. Since the iPhone is so heavily subsidized the company has to try to recoup some of the costs. AT&T does so on monthly service charges for voice, data, and SMS. Had Google Voice been allowed the app could seriously cut into AT&T's bottom line.

Of course neither AT&T nor Apple will confirm the reasoning behind the apps being rejected and pulled.

The setup:

Connecting our LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo was a breeze and took less than 3 mins from start to finish. Simply install the DYMO software, plug in the 450 TT and you should be up and printing in no time.

The printer comes with two test rolls of labels, one for address and one for stamps and since the 450 TT auto senses the labels when you slide them up to the print head its almost fool proof. I did have an issue with the first set of labels jamming up, however it was my error for not having them justified correctly.

One touch I really liked was the in-line transformer for the power cord. Almost everything these days uses a transformer that takes up too much plug space. But out 450 TT moves the transformer down the cord allowing for extra plug space on my surge protector.

The software:

The DYMO Label version 8 software sets up very nicely. The layout is nicely organized with everything you need well placed. You can setup the program to print just about anything from one of labels to bar codes or you can print labels directly from your favorite programs – no retyping or program switching required! Print from within Microsoft Word, Excel, or Outlook, QuickBooks, or CardScan – just select the text and click an icon.

dymo 8

The built in address book and auto address correction make it quick and easy to print out a full mailing list. A handy feature for sending invites to friends and family or for the home worker that has a block list of addresses to mail to.

I didn't have the chance to try the DYMO Stamps service, but looking at the introduction video it looks like its as simple and efficient to use as the rest of the included software. Since there is no monthly fee and you only pay as you go there really is no reason not to try it out, I simply didn't have the time nor did I have anything that needed shipping over the course of our trial.

In conclusion:

For someone that needs a great looking, compact label maker the DYMO LabelWriter 450 Twin Turbo would be a great choice. The MSRP of $210 might seem a little pricey at first, however once you see how much time you can save with the speed and efficiency of this little machine you'll quickly see that its well worth the cost.

Have A Need For Weed? iPhone's Got an App For That

Two L.A. based software engineers, Devin Calloway and Julian Cain, have made headlines this last week when their new iPhone app was approved by Apple. The new app which is designed to help medical marijuana users find the nearest medical marijuana dispensary as well as weed-friendly doctors and lawyers is appropriately titled "Cannabis".

The $2.99 app quickly became popular as many news sites jumped on the story and run several articles with catchy titles like "Need some weed? There's an app for that"(link) and "Need Medical Marijuana? Yep, iPhone's Got an App For That" (link) sold more than 1,000 units its its first few days of availability. The apps founders said they planned to put 50 cents of every purchase -- or 17% of the proceeds -- toward establishing a nonprofit organization dedicated to media outreach for the pro-pot cause.

Calloway is a founding member of ajnag.com which stands for Activists Justifying the Natural Agriculture of Ganja. According to Calloway, the website was the first comprehensive online map of legal cannabis distributors as well as doctors and attorneys in the U.S. when he launched it in 2006.

Verizon Backs Off Exclusivity Deals

After see mounting pressure from Congress, the DOJ and the FCC Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam sent a letter to the House of Representatives last week indicating that the company would back off of their exclusivity contacts after a six month period. Verizon said following the initial six months the company will share access to exclusive phones with small wireless companies with fewer than 500,000 customers.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Congress and the DOJ has begun questioning whether wireless carriers are hurting competition by shutting out rivals from offering popular new phones like the Apple iPhone, the Palm Pre and the BlackBerry Storm. And the Federal Communications Commission has said it is looking into the issue.

"At the heart of this issue is this question: Is it better or worse for competition, for innovation and for the American consumer if the carrier controls the decision over what devices can and cannot operate on their network?" Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) said in his opening remarks at the hearing. "I think the Commerce Committee should consider how the wireless industry is functioning and whether current practices are in the best interest of competition and the consumer."

Verizon appears to be making a preemptive move trying to avoid a full blown investigation while still addressing the concerns of the smaller carriers. McAdam's letter was sent to Representative Rick Boucher, the Virginia Democrat who is chairman of a major telecommunications subcommittee. While Verizon isn't completely backing of their exclusivity deals by appeasing smaller carriers they may preserve the right of big carriers to offer handsets their rivals cannot.

“Exclusivity arrangements promote competition and innovation in device development and design,” Verizon wrote.

“When we procure exclusive handsets from our vendors, we typically buy hundreds of thousands or even millions of each device. Otherwise manufacturers may be reluctant to make the investments of time, money and production capacity to support a particular device.”

Microsoft Delivers Linux Device Drivers

In a move out of the ordinary for the software giant Microsoft today announced they'd release the source code for three Linux device drivers for inclusion in the Linux tree. The drivers will be available to the Linux community and customers alike, and will enhance the performance of the Linux operating system when virtualized on Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V or Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V.

The 20,000 lines of source code released by Microsoft will be included in the Linux kernel under a GPLv2 license.

Sam Ramji, Microsoft's senior director of Platform Strategy in Microsoft’s Server and Tools organization said, "We are seeing Microsoft communities and open source communities grow together, which is ultimately of benefit to our customers. The Linux community, for example, has built a platform used by many customers. So our strategy is to enhance interoperability between the Windows platform and many open source technologies, which includes Linux, to provide the choices our customers are asking for."

The goal according to Ramji is to provide MS customers and partners more flexibility and choice

"Obviously we are tickled about it," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation. "Hell has frozen over, the seas have parted," he said with a chuckle.

Microsoft originally made the announcement at the annual OSCON open source conference that opened Monday in San Jose. Greg Kroah-Hartman, the Linux driver project lead and a Novell fellow, said he accepted more than 20,000 lines of Microsoft's code at 9 a.m. PT Monday. The Microsoft code will be available as part of the next Linux public tree release in the next 24 hours, which would mean inclusion in version 2.6.30.1 which will be the next stable release.

Firefox Add-On Creators Get Donation Button

Mozilla has announced a new pilot program is once in place will allow Firefox add-on developers to ask downloaders for donations for using their add-ons.

The new program, which Mozilla has aptly named "Contributions", has been in the planning stages since May. The program will provide developers an add-on tool that will allow them to add an optional "Contribute" button to the install process of every add-on they create.

discover cardNick Nguyen, Mozilla's director of add-ons tells Computerworld "The intent of this pilot is to provide an optional path for payments."

Mozilla has said that Contributions will be entirely optional and that there is no need to worry about the potential of developers now charging for your favorite add-ons. The initial program is set to launch as a pilot. With Mozilla developers and users to help support the program by providing their feedback.

How will payments work?

Contributions will be made through PayPal. Developers can optionally create a PayPal ID for each of their Firefox Add-ons. Users will be presented with a “Contribute” button that gives them the option of paying the suggested amount or a different amount. Again contributing is optional.

Does Mozilla earn a percentage from Contributions?

For this pilot, Mozilla will not earn a percentage of any contributions made by users. Developers will receive all the proceeds from contributions minus the PayPal transaction fee.

Google Voice Mobile App Now Available For Blackberry and Android Phones

Google Voice, the universal voice-mail and call-routing service that Google initially rolled out back in March is now officially available as an app for Blackberry and Android based mobile phones.

Previously, to place a call using Google Voice, you had to dial your own Google Voice number from your cell phone or use the Quick Call button online. With this new mobile app, you can seamlessly make calls and send SMS messages with your Google Voice number directly from your mobile phone. The app is fully integrated with each phone’s contacts, so you can call via Google Voice straight from your address book. Instead of seeing your cell phone number on the caller ID screen the users on the other end see your Google Voice number. Allow users a better level of privacy, as well as a more unified presence.

From the mobile app, you can:
  • Access your voicemail: read message transcripts, follow along with "karaoke-style" playback of messages, read SMS messages sent to your Google Voice number (even if your phone doesn't receive SMS messages) and access your call history
  • Place calls that display your Google Voice number from your address book, the app dialer (Blackberry) or the native dialer (Android)
  • Send SMS messages that display your Google Voice number
  • Place international calls at low rates

You can download the app from the Google Voice mobile site at m.google.com/voice or for you Android users you can search the Android Market for "Google Voice."

If like me you still don't have a Blackberry or an Android-powered device, Google has a mobile web version of the Google Voice site (accessible by typing www.google.com/voice into your mobile browser) that allows you to access the Google Voice features. You'll need a Google Voice account to use the mobile application. Currently, Google Voice is only available in the U.S. If you'd like to check it out, request an invite here.

iPhone users don't feel slighted this isn't a shun by Google. The company says it is working with Apple to bring its Google Voice app to the iPhone. In the meantime you'll have to access the service through your Web browser.

Amazon Sued Over Kindle Protective Case Issues

When you buy a protective case for a device like your iPhone, laptop or in this case your Kindle you typically expect it to, well protect. In the case of Matthew Geise, who recently shelled over an extra $30 for a protective cover wife's ebook reader the case actually did more harm than good. Just 3 months after his purchase Geise's Kindle started cracking where the cover fastens via its metal clips.

According to the Seattle Times Geise has filed a federal class action lawsuit seeking more than $5 million in refunds, treble damages, and legal costs, related to what he claims an Amazon rep told him is a common problem. Geise was told that he'd have to pay $200 to fix his new $359 Kindle.

Brier Dudley, the Seattle Time reporter who wrote the story, doesn't specify the exact case model, but it appears likely that Geise is referring to the $30 leather cover that Amazon offers immediately under the Kindle's "Add to Shopping Cart" button. The product has a 4.5-star customer rating, but on the low end, complaints of cracking abound.

Microsoft Denies Windows 7 RTM Leak

Over the weekend rumors had popped up that build 7600 of Window 7 Ultimate edition, in both 32 and 64 bit versions where in fact the Release To Manufacture (RTM) copy of the new OS. Several reports had surfaced that the new build which began popping up on torrent sites on Friday was indeed the real deal. However those rumors had been quickly dispelled and are none completely dismissed by MS.

In a blog post posted yesterday by Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc says, "Over the past week, there have been many rumors surrounding RTM. We are close, but have not yet signed off on Windows 7. When we RTM you will most certainly hear it here. As we’ve said all along, we will RTM Windows 7 when it’s ready. As previously stated, we expect Windows 7 to RTM in the 2nd half of July."

LeBlanc continues with a warning that anyone trying out these "leaked builds" should heed. LeBlanc says, "As always, beware of what you download. There are many bogus copies of Windows 7 floating around the Internet. More often than not, they contain a rather nice malware payload. And don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. When Windows 7 hits RTM, it will be announced here. [on the Windows 7 Team Blog] Until that happens, any builds you are likely to see on the web are either not the final bits or are laced with malicious code."

Google Announces Chrome OS Partners

Although Google just made the announcement about their new operating system last night they already have the web a buzz. Sites are teaming with information and speculation as to how popular Chrome OS might be once it actually hits the consumer market. In Google's original announcement they let it slip that they had already teamed with several netbook and PC manufactures in developing the new OS.

Today they tipped their hand a little more and gave us all a peek at what we might expect and who they will be teaming with.

Google Chrome OS - FAQ

Is Google Chrome OS free?

Yes – Google Chrome OS is an open source project and will be available to use at no cost.

This might be great news for consumers looking for a good low cost alternative to using Windows, Linux or even Google's Android (which will reportedly be showing up on several devices before years end). Right now its a wait and see situation as we just don't know that much about the OS.

What companies is Google working with to support Google Chrome OS?

The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Among others, these companies include: Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments.

Acer and ASUS are the no. 1 and no. 2 netbook manufacturers worldwide so the partnership there is really no surprise. HP and Lenovo are also large netbook manufacturers so again no really surprise. The one name missing from the list that is a bit pf a shocker is Dell however this by no means excludes them. Freescale, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments are chip companies that Google is likely working with to ensure a good user experience. We know they are looking to get as much widespread chip support they can!

I'm a developer – how can I work with you?

Later this year, the Google Chrome OS code will be open source. Google will be looking forward to working with the open source community and making their own small contributions to the great work being done out there. Please stay tuned to the Google Chrome Blog for more details

If you are interested in a full time position as a software engineer please visit the jobs pages for the following offices and indicate that you are interested in Chrome.

Building anticipation!
Since they won't officially be releasing the source code until later this year we won't likely see exact details of what the new OS will bring to the table until early next year. It will likely take developers a few good months to get the development ball rolling.

Google's announcement however comes at a great time to build tons of anticipation. With only the official release left the buzz surrounding Windows 7 is already dying a bit. Netbooks continue to gain ground on the PC market and will likely gain more ground with the back to school crowd hitting stores over the next month or two.

If just the announcement of a new OS makes this big a mark then wait until we get some actual screenshots and a few hands on reviews!
