On November 12, 2010 Google will be officially saying goodbye to GOOG-411 the companies free voice-powered directory assistance service.
Originally launched back 2007 GOOG-411 was the first of Google's services to use speech recognition. At the time of its launch the 411 service was a great idea and very well received by users that were tired of being hit with directory assistance fees from their cellphone carriers. Google has said the company is making the change because many cell phone users are moving to smartphones with internet access and they no longer need to dial 411 to get contact information. However for those of us still in the stone age and not using smartphones it is sad to see the service shuttering.
Google will ve offering a bit of a reprieve for GOOG-411 that don’t use a smartphone, and you’re trying to call a business. Those users can send a text message with the name and location of the business to 466453 ("GOOGLE") and Google will text you back with the information.
