How To Disable Facebooks Photo Recognition

Facebook has automatically implemented a new feature some users that uses facial recognition software to "help" your Facebook friends tag you in their photos. If you have this option enabled, any time one of your friends uploads a photo, Facebook will "suggest" you as a match based on the recommendations of the software.

While Facebook will only add you as a suggestion to your friends and will not recommend you as a match to someone not on your friends list, some people might find this new feature a bit intrusive and even a bit annoying. I know I for one would rather have the option to "approve" tags in some of my friends photos but sadly, Facebook won't give us an option to disable this. We are just stuck manually un-tagging ourselves from any unflattering photos.

They have however, given us a choice to enabled or disabled the facial recognition feature. Just note its enabled by default, why they did that and not opt-in only is beyond this blogger but hey at least they give you an opt out option.

If you want to opt-out of this feature, then follow the steps below:
  1. Access your privacy settings by clicking 'Account' in the top right corner of your Facebook page then from the drop down click 'Privacy Settings' (or click this direct link)
  2. Now click 'Customize settings' located below the setting tables in the center of the page.
  3. Scroll down until you see "Things others share" and look for "Suggest photos of me to friends."
  4. Now all you have to do is click 'Edit Settings' and disable the feature.
Unfortunately this won't turn off the suggestion feature for your own account it will just remove you from being suggested to others.
